In this presentation, participants will learn about sexual wellness, models and measures of sexual wellness, diversity of human sexuality, the appropriate referral resources for clients, and why awareness of and comfort with sexuality and sexual wellness are important, not only for our clients, but for general physical therapists as well.

  1. Define sexuality, sexual health, and sexual wellness.
  2. Analyze sexuality through the biopsychosocial lens (and how it relates to the ICF).
  3. Understand how sexuality can be an indicator of overall health, including how diagnoses like erectile dysfunction may indicate cardiac disease.
  4. Evaluate the impacts of a new diagnosis or disease to sexual well-being and be able to assist with symptom management to support sexual wellness.
  5. Define and promote sex-positivity.
  6. Articulate how power dynamics, such as patient privacy, in healthcare setting may impact sexual well-being, including conversations around sexual health.
  7. Understand signs of sexual violence and choose the best referral sources.
  8. Specify the appropriate sexual wellness practitioners for referral, in recognition of professional limitations and scope of practice.
