The APTA House of Delegates recently adopted the position statement “The Role of the Physical Therapist and the APTA in Sleep Health” in December 2020, which highlighted the importance of educating people about sleep. How should you best educate your patients though, especially about a topic that is so broad and multi-factorial? In this interactive session, the co-founders of PhysioSage will teach you the main pillars of patient education, the foundational knowledge you need to know about sleep, and will end with a workshop applying the pillars of patient education to teaching your patients about sleep. 

Upon completion of this presentation participants will be able to: 

  • Identify the main pillars of patient education including Clinical Reflection Teaching Skills Assessment of Learning and Retention Health Literacy Patient Empowerment 
  • Apply the following patient education skills in their practice: Reflective processing Teach Back method Shared Decision Making 
  • Evaluation of patient educational materials Communication with patient-friendly language to enhance learning  
  • Understand the importance of sleep health as it relates to public health and physical therapy outcomes 
  • Analyze the factors that contribute to poor sleep health 
  • Create a comprehensive plan of care for a physical therapy patient that includes sleep education, positioning, and appropriate therapy interventions
