Today, more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and 220,000 of these live in the state of Illinois. As the Silver Tsunami continues to roar towards our shores, the need for comprehensive and evidence-informed clinical management for our patients with dementia is more vital than ever. Increasingly, individuals with cognitive impairments caused by dementia are coming into contact with a variety of professionals across all healthcare settings. Due to the gross under preparedness of our healthcare system in managing the complex needs of this patient population, the state of Illinois is pioneering mandated training for all healthcare professionals effective January 1, 2023. This presentation serves as an introduction for physical therapy professionals on assessment and diagnosis, effective communication strategies, clinical management, and care planning. Prepare yourself ahead of the deadline with this introductory course to better meet the needs of our patients with dementia.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Appraise the prevalence of dementia in the population, including the most common types of dementia and underlying causes.
  2. Effectively screen for signs and symptoms of dementia and cognitive impairment which would warrant further assessment and promote timely access to care and intervention.
  3. Build a plan of care to address the physical therapy needs of patients with dementia.
  4. Communicate effectively and compassionately with individuals who have dementia, with sensitivity and in a way that is appropriate to the person.
