The purpose of this presentation is to assist the physical therapist in understanding the evidence for telehealth and optimizing the patient experience by identifying and decreasing barriers in the virtual orthopedic rehabilitation environment. These barriers include the necessary space requirements for variable orthopedic PT diagnosis, technology requirements, technology literacy, safety, ethical and financial concerns. Presenters will instruct on the integration of the literature into real-world practice. Presenters will also share the device distance preferred for upper quarter, lower quarter and spine diagnoses utilizing a variety of electronic devices. Other topics will include technological literacy, consent, patient satisfaction, therapist satisfaction, plan of care and telerehabilitation simulation. In addition, we will explore the ethical and financial questions that may be addressed with telerehabilitation practices.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify and address potential barriers regarding the virtual rehabilitation session.
  2. Understand the optimal distance and perspective for telerehabilitation care and how this can change with different electronic devices.
  3. Improve productivity of therapy sessions by establishing an optimal virtual environment for patients and practitioners.
  4. Analyze the current telehealth rehabilitation literature and identify areas of future research.
  5. Apply the lecture material to a simulated telehealth experience.
